I really think this last episode of Glee has been my favorite so far. Some great writing, acting and singing.
Probably one of the main reasons is because Kristen Chenowitch guest starred again. I love her character (& her). If she an Matthew Morrison could duet every week, I'd be okay with that. (
see my favorite from this week) And I really enjoy the combination of them. She's got far more range and refinement to her singing than him but his grown-up boy band sound plays off of her nicely. It just works for me.
And who would have thought that Will and April would bond over being lonely?
Sue Sylvester's character continues to crack me up (except for the hair jokes, those are already old for me.) As she looks at best friends Mercedes (the black overweight diva) and Kurt (the white gay guy with flair) giving a little celebratory hand wiggle at each other she simply asks, "How do you two not have a show on Bravo?" lol
And while this episode had chops and great heartfelt storylines, I really think it's the the throw-away lines that make this show great. As I said once before, it's all the "in-between" stuff. Like Brittany's (the dumb blonde cheerleader) line "I think my cat's reading my diary." or Kurt's discussion on his effort to lose weight "For breakfast I had a Splenda.", April's "Will Schuester? I just had a sex dream about you!" and my favorite, Kurt's wonderfully accepting father asking, "What? So I'm suddenly not the guy who sat through Riverdance three years in a row?"
But there was so much meat in the episode, Finn's resentment of his mother moving on with her love life, and Kurt's resentment of his father connecting with his girlfriend's son.
Mercedes battling with trying to lose weight to fit in and the pain of body image issues.
I've always LOVED the relationship between Kurt and his father. I remember early in the season when we thought Kurt's football-loving Dad was going to be the typical anti-gay son character, how surprised I was that he loved and accepted his son for who he was. He won my heart at that moment. So it was a great treat to have them deal with this relationship further by having Burt bond with Finn over sports and, in result, have Kurt feel left out as the son. I cried during their talk as Kurt expressed his feelings and Burt said he loved Kurt but they "...have a deal. I don't try to change you and you don't try to change me." It was killing me that Finn and Kurt neither one realized (at first) quite how selfish they were being. It is hard for a teenager to understand the romantic needs of their parents - you just don't think of your parents that way. But I could get where Burt and Carol were coming from. They've both been so (tying in with the Will and April theme) lonely.
I also think that the lady who plays Carol is wonderful. She's very natural and I really believe her in that role.
What a beautiful moment between Quinn and Mercedes. I CRIED with Mercedes as she whispered, "I'm so embarrassed." The dialogue was great.
Love the shots of Kurt's face from behind Mercedes as she's singing. LOVED Quinn's "Suck It!" expression as she walked to stand by Mercedes. :) One bad touch of editing, they make a point of having Kurt remain with his back to the camera after the other Cheerios turn around but the camera completely loses focus on him as he turns around and walks towards Mercedes. I feel like we lost an important emotional moment there.
I've always loved the variety of songs they choose for the show even if I don't actually like all the songs. In this episode we had Springsteen, Burt Bacharach, Christinia Aguilera and Diana Ross. Nice variety. And it's just nice that the secondary characters got solos. :)
LOL @ Sue's face when the reporter is telling her she's a visionary. I love the moments when Sue is alone and you get the glimpses at how she really feels.
(I still don't like Finn but that's another story for another day.)
I like we're really getting to see Sue lately. Like she's still amazingly mean and awesome and snarky but she still has real feelings :)
Just...pure love for this ep. Pure love.
